Faecal sludge generally consists of >95% water, making dewatering an essential part of treatment. However, faecal sludge is highly heterogeneous, making it difficult to determine appropriate conditioner dosing for dewatering. The Management of Excreta, Wastewater and Sludge (MEWS) group at Sandec is conducting research on faecal sludge dewatering at fundamental, empirical and applied levels. Fundamental research includes understanding the governing mechanisms between biological, physical and chemical parameters, and applied research includes how to scale that knowledge for implementations. We are currently collaborating with CubeX, a startup based in Beirut, Lebanon. CubeX is developing a mobile faecal sludge dewatering unit for application in rural areas and informal settlements in Lebanon. In the first half of 2021, they are collecting information on faecal sludge characteristics and dewaterability to inform the development of the dewatering unit. We are looking for an...

Topic Water Hub at NEST is an innovative research center on decentralized resource recovery from a building-scale water cycle within NEST (Next Evolution in Sustainable Building Technology), a modular research building of Empa and Eawag. Within NEST, wastewater streams are separated at the source, with separate streams for light and heavy greywater, urine, and blackwater. The streams are collected and processed to maximize resource recovery. Treatment must maximize resource recovery while minimizing risks to human and environmental health from resource reuse. Within this scope, we are looking for a Research Assistant (for 2 years, 80-100%) to lead projects on the recovery, treatment and reuse of greywater within NEST. The candidate will be tasked with regular monitoring, maintenance, and/or construction of grey-water treatment and distribution systems, including routine measurements of physical, chemical, and microbial water quality. Examples of microbial water quality...

The mass spectrometry facility supports all departments at Eawag regarding measurements of organic chemicals and bioanalytes (proteins, metabolites, LC/GC-HRMS), trace elements (ICP-MS), and isotope effects (GC/LC-IRMS). The facility consists of about 20 mass spectrometers, used in various scientific projects in water research that produce very large amounts of data. We are looking for a specialist who supports scientists and technicians in processing, mining, and managing mass spectrometric data within diverse research projects. The position is at the interface between mass spectrometry, software development and IT hardware maintenance and requires interactions with scientists, technicians and IT support from several departments within Eawag. The successful candidate is an individual with a master or PhD degree in natural sciences or information technology and has an excellent record in mass spectrometry, programming (e.g., R, Python, C), databases and data management....
