The world's population is expected to increase by more than a third by 2050 to reach 9.7 billion people. Over the same period, per capita income should increase significantly. These two projections point to a doubling of cereal demand between 2009 and 2050 (FAO, 2009). Over this same period, agricultural land is expected to remain stable due to the urban expansion and the significant investments needed to bring new arable land into production. Increasing the efficiency of the production systems appears to be the only option for achieving global production and food security objectives. Improving the genetic progress of crops is part of this process of securing global production. In the case of straw cereals, opportunities remain to be explored including a better integration of the information, such as the characterization of the environment, as well as new technologies, like the hybridization.Syngenta is an international company developing and producing agrochemicals and seeds.
