Job Description

EPFL, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, is one of the most dynamic university campuses in Europe and ranks among the top 20 universities worldwide. The EPFL employs more than 6,000 people supporting the three main missions of the institutions: education, research and innovation. The EPFL campus offers an exceptional working environment at the heart of a community of more than 16,000 people, including over 12,000 students and 4,000 researchers from more than 120 different countries.

PhD in Polar Atmospheric Science

Your mission :
The Extreme Environments Research Laboratory (EERL) is looking for a PhD student for the “Climate relevant interactions and feedback: the key role of sea ice and snow in the polar and global climate system” (CRiceS) project. This ambitious project aims to enhance our understanding of the ocean-ice-snow-atmosphere system by delivering improved models capable of describing polar and global climates.
Your mission will be to conduct interdisciplinary research representing the atmospheric side by analyzing existing datasets and by using these observations to improve models. You will use amongst other data from our laboratory’s expeditions to the Southern and Arctic Oceans, i.e. the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition, MOCCHA and MOSAiC projects (for details see here). Work will be highly collaborative within the international CRiceS consortium.

The EERL focuses on understanding natural and anthropogenic atmospheric processes, as well as exchange processes between the atmosphere and cryosphere, ocean and (inhabited) land that have climate impact and are impacted by climate. EERL forms part of EPFL’s new Alpine and Polar Environments Research Centre (ALPOLE) in Sion.

For the application, please submit a motivation letter including your interests and qualifications, a CV and publication list, the latter if applicable. Please also ensure to submit an application to the Doctoral Program in Civil and Environmental Engineering (EDCE). The submission deadline for this post is 15 August. Please note, Phd positions are awareded initially for one year. After one year of successful probation, the initial contract can be extended up to a total of four years.

Main duties and responsibilities include :

  • Analysis of in situ observations, numerical model output and remote sensing data
  • Development of parameterizations
  • Tight collaboration with the CRiceS consortium and participation in working meetings
  • Teaching assistantship
  • Part-time supervision of MSc students

Your profile :

  • A master degree (or equivalent) in atmospheric, climate or environmental science, meteorology, physics or similar.
  • Strong interest in interdisciplinary studies and polar regions.
  • Basic knowledge of scientific programming.
  • Data handling skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills, team player.
  • Good knowledge of English (written and spoken).
  • Capable of conducting scientific research independently.

We offer :

  • A dynamic, interdisciplinary and young research group.
