Your mission :
The Swiss Data Science Center (SDSC, is a national center between EPFL and ETH Zurich, whose mission is to accelerate the use of data science and machine learning techniques broadly within academic disciplines of the ETH Domain and the Swiss academic community at large. It aims to federate data providers, data and computer scientists, and subject-matter experts around a cutting-edge analytics platform offering domain-specific “Insights-as-a-Service” while addressing security and privacy issues inherent to the field of data science. The SDSC is composed of a large multi-disciplinary team of data & computer scientists and experts in relevant domains, distributed between our offices in Lausanne and Zurich. The unique synergy that the center will enable among the institutions of the ETH Domain and between academic and industrial stakeholders in both data science and across carefully selected domains is expected to foster scientific breakthroughs with significant societal impact.
To carry out its mission, the SDSC provides its users and partners with compute and data storage services built on top of state-of-the-art infrastructure, which is offered by different Cloud and HPC providers. It also relies on this infrastructure for its internal operations.
In order to strengthen our operational team, we are seeking a motivated System Engineer. In this role, you will support the deployment and maintenance of both our provided services and internal operations.Main duties and responsibilities include :

  • Setup and maintain production servers and applications
  • Ensure reliable functioning and availability of servers and applications and manage incidents
  • Deploy monitoring, logging and metrics tools for observability
  • Automate deployment and processes for efficiency and following best practices
  • Conduct performance assessment and troubleshooting
  • Provide technical support for the user community
  • Write technical documentation

Your profile :
Proven Experience in:

  • Linux-based infrastructure in production environment (minimum 2 years)
  • Programming and scripting (shell, Python)
  • Configuring and automation tools (like Ansible or Terraform)
  • Troubleshooting and debugging

Considered a Plus:

  • Operational experience with cloud, container or HPC platforms (like OpenStack, Kubernetes, SLURM)
  • Knowledge and skills in networking, and security
  • Knowledge and skills in storage and backup/disaster recovery
  • Experience in academic or research environments


  • Master’s or Engineering degree in computer science - or equivalent.
  • Fluent communication in English (written and spoken)
  • Well organized and able to prioritize workload
  • Service-minded personality
  • Problem solving
