Job Description

A postdoctoral research position in the laboratory of Endometriosis and Gynecological Oncology is available by September 1st 2020 to investigate the cellular diversity and mRNA expression in endometrium. The present project is supported by a grant from Innosuisse.

Who we are:

Endometriosis is a prevalent and often painful disease characterised by the implantation and growth of endometrial epithelial and stromal cells outside the uterine cavity. The disease involves many disorders in the immunological, metabolic, hormonal systems, and unfortunately the decisive trigger has not yet been identified. It is nonetheless commonly accepted that endometriosis is usually found following retrograde menstruation. This means that during the period some of the menstrual blood flows through the fallopian tubes and reaches the abdominal cavity. This blood contains cells from the uterus that are viable and adhere to the peritoneum. This is why the lining of the endometrium, as the cellular source, has been and is still under intensive study. Our research laboratory is linked to the department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the Inselspital which allows us to directly analyse tissues and fluids that are collected during the laparoscopic surgery. By comparing the results from patients with endometriosis with those of unaffected women we aim to identify, amongst others, the biological variations that may explain the occurrence, the course and the symptoms of endometriosis.
The proposed project is a funded collaboration between Inselspital and Scailyte AG, a Swiss Top100 startup company focusing on leveraging single-cell technologies and artificial intelligence (AI) data analytics to develop next-generation in vitro diagnostics.

Position objects - requirements
We are looking for an independent and strongly motivated researcher with a PhD or MD/PhD degree, and experience in NGS and single-cell sequencing. Additional expertise for research projects involving human subjects, gynaecology, pain mechanisms, epithelial to mesenchymal transition or inflammation would be highly desirable. The ideal candidate is an adaptable team-player and has excellent communication and organizational skills. In this exciting role the candidate will have the unique opportunity to drive a discovery project addressing an enormous medically unmet-need using cutting edge genomic technology combined with machine learning based data analytics.
As post-doctorant you will take part into a project aiming to develop a non-invasive single-cell molecular in vitro diagnostic test for endometriosis. This work will consist mainly into preparation of single-cell suspensions, construction of gene expression libraries and analysis of the immune profile and transcriptome at the cellular level using the 10X genomics platform.
This project will provide multiple opportunities for collaborations and cross-disciplinary scientific exchanges. Meanwhile, the candidate should have excellent communication skills (particularly in english) and should be familiar with the constraints related to translational researches, in particular regarding deadlines. Aptitude to drive and maintain intra and inter team collaborations will be highly appreciated.
An interesting aspect for your carrier, you will have the possibility to develop your own research program taking advantage of our large biobank and of the expertise of our physicians.
The package
The position is limited to 2 years with a possibility of extension. To successfully reach your objectives dedicated technical support will be made available to you. The position will remain open until a suitable candidate will be recruited.

Please submit: CV, list of publications, motivation letter, description of your research interests, copies of PhD or MD/PhD degree and the names and telephone numbers of three referees.
